It would also be nice to have a page about New User account creation, in the manual.

As for 2008 R2 I think you Arris said it very well with the words: “For security reasons it’s wise to not work on an Administrator account during your daily work and/or entertainment”.

  4. Alex says:

The “Speech recognition”-link seems to be down.

  8. Server2012>Win8 says:

Windows 8 utilizes a go-to-metro button, and detects a display’s orientation for auto-rotate through MSFT devices PNP0C40 and PNP0C60. (Hardware IDs ACPIMSFT9000 and ACPIMSFT9001) Can this be enabled in Windows Server 2012? PNP0C40 is described as a “Windows-compatible Button Array”, and PNP0C60 is a ‘Convertible Laptop display sensor device’ They’re GPIO devices. They appear to have been disabled in Server 2012.

  9. xuxing says:

3dsmax 2012 2013 2014 all of them can`t run in windows server 2012, the dump file gives a 0xC0000005 exception,
I completely disabled DEP( using editbcd /set nx AlwaysOff, and disabled memory protection in bios ), and I disabled SEHOP, and they still can`t run,
    maxpayne 3 can`t run too

  12. Elliot-Labs says:

Can you post a fix for Windows Media Player streaming? I have a media server and I can’t stream from Windows Server 2012 (laptop) but all of my client installations (Windows 8) can stream and Windows 7 can stream.

  13. Elliot-Labs says:

Does the dev even visit the site any more?

  14. Sylvain says:

+1 For speech recognition. I tried the same method than for 2008, but no luck until now.

  16. Mark says:

x2 for sticky notes; it’s a very useful tool, I wonder why it’s missing from Server 2012

    • Elliot-Labs says:

Yes i am missing Stick Notes also. i tried installing the version from server 2008 R2 but it is just a dud exe so it won’t start

P.S. Love this site my computer ROCKS now!

  17. Cowboy says:

I have added Windows logon and logoff sounds to the control panel and they play in control panel. But they are not triggered by logging on or off.

I would like to be able to modify imageres as we did in Windows 7 to get a customized startup sound. Right now I don’t get any startup sound even though it is checked in control panel.

  18. Don Reynolds says:

It seems that when you try to see the game controller settings from Devices and Printers, nothing happens. Can you post the System32 and SysWOW64 joystick control panel files for Windows Server 2012 64bit?

  19. Noname says:

    I would like Sticky Notes.

  20. ToKro says:

  24. Follower says:

all of your work is absolutely helpful or me! Thank you very much~
By the way, windows journal should be added. I thinks some of 2012 users definitely want some similar features of windows 8 on tablets.

Anyway I really appreciate you again~

  25. tema says:

If you need transparent taskbar β€” just use personalization and download any windows theme. Apply and you got a nice W8 taskbar. It will be great to automate this and add theme to “converter”.

  26. Contributor says:

I love your site, but I have one more thing left to get working that has been driving me crazy.

If you enable the Hyper-V Role in 2012 it disables Sleep / Standby mode completely. Haven’t been able to reverse this yet.

    Any takers?

    • Arris says:

Thanks for your comments! πŸ™‚ Unfortunately after installing Hyper-V, you can’t indeed use these features anymore. The only remedy is to uninstall Hyper-V but that’s probably what you don’t want. I think this limitation has something to do with the fact that Hyper-V is a type-1 hypervisor, although it seems like a type-2 one (wiki).

      • Tim Baker says:

You can not use Sleep or Standby or Hibernate while running the Hyper-V role because when running hyper-v your desktop operating system is actually for all intents and purposes running on top of the hyper-visor as a virtual machine. Therefore, if you set it to hibernate or sleep, not only could you loose your systems state, if you have any other vm’s running, those will crash as well.
There are other power-saving features you could enable such as having the processor slow way down and disks shut off (providing again you are not running any other vm’s other than your desktop.)

  27. Contributor says:

You also need to add this step

    http://www.win2008workstation.com/enable-windows-search-service/

For enabling the windows search service. You don’t need to install the file services role anymore in 2012, just the Windows Search feature and you’re good to go!

  28. Canon says:

I wish Task Manager shows disk performance like win8 task manager.

  29. Bala says:

For – Quick Switch Between User Accounts, if you install the Classic Start Menu, you see the option for Switch User… this work well.
