Disable Data Execution Prevention
I have already seen several people complaining that their game / program crashes with Exception Code c0000005 when trying to start. The exception code c0000005 stands for an access violation in memory. When running Server 2008 you have a high probability that DEP has blocked an instruction, and that’s the reason your executable stops execution. By default DEP is in Windows Server 2008 enabled for all programs and services.
In this tutorial we will leave Data Execution Prevention only enabled for essential Windows programs and services. All programs and games you install won’t use DEP anymore. As an example I show you how I fixed Dungeon Siege II, but this works for applications and other games too!
Example of crashing game “Dungeon Siege II” before disabling DEP
1. Open the Start menu, right click at Computer and select Properties in the context menu.
2. On the left below Tasks click Advanced system settings. In the Performance section click Settings. After that the window Performance Options shows up, go to the tab Data Execution Prevention, select Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only and click OK.Click OK when you are notified that you need to restart your computer.
3. Restart your computer and probably you can now play your favourite game or run the program that didn’t work before!
Game is now working! As you see I only didn’t insert the game disk.
tnx for your help 😆

I have allready tried to disable DEP actually on windows 7 it comes that way, any ideas im very very frustrated… XD (not really)
You can completely disable DEP on server 2008 from the command prompt using bcdedit.exe , just enter this command:
bcdedit /set nx AlwaysOff

Or even better, add the crashing program to the DEP exception list underneath the radio buttons, this ensures that DEP is still enabled for all other programs.
I’m having the same problem with Halo 2 on Windows Server 2008, it is a brand new install I’ve tried everything from disabling DEP to installing everything all over again. I would really like it to work as soon as possible. I’m running Windows Server 2008 Standard 64-bit on a Macbook Pro.

I’ve tried all in the description but i always get the same error.
With/without Compatibility Mode, Gameux.dll installed, DEP disabled but it wont work.
Any ideas?
I just want to thank you for taking the time and helping others with the server 2008. If not for your instructions on your website, I wouldn’t have tried it.
So far I can’t get any virus program to work, and I can’t get sound. I’ll keep tweeking…
Thanks again.

Arris: I am glad you enjoy the manual! A list of working Antivirus applications can be found here!
Uuuuh maybe I’m missing the cool-kid school bus here, but why are you running Server 08 if you want to play games?
My Experence getting Gears of War working:
Install
Patch Live! http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/support/live/Pages/default.aspx
Patch GoW [I am unsure if this step is nessacary] (Google for it, i cant find an offical download page)
Make sure you have gameux.dll and DEP is off.
If you have Exception Code: c0000005 errors, try running the game as administrator.
I haven’t before, but now I’ve tried and there showed me another error:

Both in Bioshock 1.1. I’ve already disabled DEP, but it doesn’t work.

Arris: Because you get exception code c0000005 I suggest you to follow the disable DEP tutorial. If that doesn’t work, fully turn off DEP by executing bcdedit /set nx AlwaysOff in the Command Prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd.exe).
try disable dep by using cmd.exe
Run command prompt(right click choose run as administrator)
type
bcdedit /set nx alwaysoff
reboot then try run the program again

Arris: Looks like more people have this exact problem: Google – iw3mp.exe c0000005 002764f3. Maybe they got solutions too?
Whoops – I just thought for the heck of it I’d try manually selecting DEP for HALO2.exe – says I can’t turn it off for HALO2 – sounds like I need a registry hack.
I have the same issue with HALO2 on 2008. I have an 8800GT with the latest drivers – I have a vanilla install – haven’t even installed antivirus yet.
I have made the changed to DEP and rebooted
Opening HALO2 I get within a few seconds of starting doesn’t even load the game fully –

I’m not sure what this is about and how it concerns the opperation of anything arbitrary as I have expirenced with gaming of late and a simular problem with Diablo 11. If a company is causing this then a stop should be instituted asap!!
